We’re absolutely thrilled to share that Jack Nevines has been named the 2023 Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year, in partnership with CARTERS.
After taking out the Auckland regional title earlier this year, Jack went on to represent our region at the national finals – and came home with the top prize.
A big win for Jack (and the Faulkner team)
The finals were held in Auckland over two big days. Each finalist completed a six-hour practical build challenge and a 45-minute interview with a national judging panel. The brief? Construct a technical workbench (with no margin for error) to be donated to an early learning centre via Evolve Education Group.
Jack nailed it – literally and figuratively.
“We knew Jack was a standout from day one,” says Managing Director Ross Faulkner. “He’s committed to learning, genuinely passionate about the trade, and just a really solid operator. To see him recognised on the national stage is something special.”
What the judges said
The judging panel had high praise for Jack’s overall performance – particularly his leadership, technical skill, and professionalism under pressure.
“Jack showed a natural ability to lead, and the management of his project was faultless. His knowledge of the building code, methodology and materials really stood out, and it was clear he has a deep interest in the industry.”
As the national winner, Jack received a $5,000 CARTERS Business Tools Grant to support his next steps, plus use of a brand-new ute for 12 months, courtesy of CARTERS.
Learning the trade the right way
Jack is currently completing his training through BCITO, a division of Te Pūkenga. He joined Faulkner Construction early in his apprenticeship and quickly became an integral part of our crew.
“There’s a lot to learn on a site like ours – the detail is everything,” says Ross. “But Jack’s someone who just keeps showing up, asking questions, and giving things a go. He’s earned this.”
Jack says the support from the Faulkner team has made a huge difference.
“From day one, I felt backed. I’ve learned so much here – not just about building, but how to work well with a team, how to plan a job properly, and how to think ahead. I’m really grateful for the opportunity.”
A big year for the industry
2023 marked 20 years of the Apprentice of the Year competition, which celebrates the best of the best from across the country. The construction industry has come a long way in that time – growing in scale, diversity, and professionalism.
Faulkner Construction is proud to be part of that evolution, helping grow the next generation of builders who do things the right way.
“We’re not just here to build houses,” says Ross. “We’re here to build good people too. Jack’s win is a great reminder of why that matters.”
