CLEVEDON ESTATE CLEVEDON

RENOVATION

2015

Herbst Architects

A traditional, stone-clad home in Clevedon, Papakura, has a couple of new best friends. Two modern pavilions sit alongside the original residence, creating a dynamic relationship between old and new.

The flat-roofed structures, sheathed in a taught filigree-like timber skin, form a delicate counterpoint to the stone bulk of the existing abode. Sheltered alfresco spaces have been created between the additions and the established home. The pavilions serve separate purposes: one houses a recreation room, swimming pool, pool pavilion and tennis court; the other is utilitarian, with a garage, storerooms and office. The form and fabric of the buildings contrast beautifully with each other. The garage building is sandwiched between a concrete floor and roof slab, enhancing the lightness of the timber. The bright and breezy feeling inside the sauna-style pool pavilion is pleasantly counterintuitive. Views are framed and pixelated by timber screens, providing a contrast to the expansive outlook from the existing house. It’s a complex build that has been executed with precision.
